Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Inha University, Incheon 402-751, Korea Contact e-mail: hjjin inha.ac.kr Recently, carbon nanotube CNT ; -filled nanofibrous membranes have been produced by electrospinning to improve their performance characteristics. Although the nanofibrous membranes showed a significant enhancement in their mechanical properties, their electrical properties were inferior to those of typical semiconductors or conductors. In this study, we demonstrate a new and simple processing route which can be used to incorporate CNTs into a polymer matrix by adsorption. The CNTs were adsorbed on the surface of nanofibers electrospun from an aqueous solution of silk fibroin with poly ethylene oxide ; by dip-coating the nanofibrous membranes in a bath containing CNT dispersion. The dispersion of the CNTs was prepared by the sonication of the CNTs in an water containing a surfactant. The CNT adsorbed membranes not only have good electrical properties 10-4 S cm ; , but also retain the inherent characteristics of the nanofibrous membranes, such as their high porosity and flexibility. The synapsins and epilepsy A. Menegon, D. Bonanomi, M. Giannandrea, C. Albertinazzi, F. Benfenati, F. Valtorta We have studied for several years the synapsins syn ; , a family of synaptic vesicle proteins involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter release and synaptogenesis. The observation that KO mice for syn I and or syn II 2 show partial seizures and the recent identification of a SYN1 non-sense mutation in a family with X-linked epilepsy indicates a role of syns in human epilepsy. The loss of syns has been shown to disrupt the reserve pool of synaptic vesicles and to induce marked depression of neurotransmitter release at high firing rates. Thus, the severe epileptic phenotype of the syn KO mice suggests the existence of neuronal excitability imbalance attributable to a differential contribution of syns at inhibitory versus excitatory synapses. Indeed, preliminary results suggest that syn I KO neuronal networks have a deficit in GABAergic inhibitory transmission. We have also introduced with PCR of syn I the mutation present in the family affected by epilepsy and have analyzed the expression and the cellular properties of the syn mutant. The mutated protein appears to be expressed, but to have lost the ability to undergo selective synaptic targeting. We are currently testing the capability of mutated syn I to interfere with synaptic physiology and with neuronal viability. Manifestations in mechanistic and endpoint data. Implementation of the Rabin fingerprinting algorithm used in this study follows the principles presented by Broder in [Bro93], which is an extension of the work done by Rabin. Broder uses precomputed tables to process more than 1 bit at a time, particularly, 32 bits are divided into four bytes and processed in one iteration. The value of k, which is the degree of the irreducible polynomial and consequently the length of the fingerprint, should be a multiple of 32. As shown in Figure 3.3, to divide a file into content-defined chunks of data, the program incrementally analyses a given file using a sliding window and marks boundaries according to the Rabin fingerprints obtained in this process. It inspects every w bytes of a sliding window that is shifted over the contents of the file. Although the value of w can be tuned, changing the size of the sliding window does not significantly impact the result. Experimental evidence in [Mor02, MCM01] shows that by setting w 48 bytes it is possible to discover significant levels of data duplication. Figure 3.3 a ; shows that adding a new byte into the sliding window is accomplished in two parts. First, the value for the oldest byte in the window is subtracted from the fingerprint. Second, the terms of the new byte are added to the fingerprint. This is possible since the fingerprint is distributive over addition. When subtracting, precomputed tables are used in order to improve the implementation performance. Rabin fingerprints for each window frame are calculated and if the value obtained matches the r least significant bits of a constant, a breakpoint is marked. 64 and dolasetron.
18. HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF CELECOXIB IN RAT PLASMA. Michael Guirguis, S. Sattari and F. Jamali. Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Purpose. Celecoxib is one of a new generation of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs ; . They selectively inhibit cyclooxygenases2 COX-2 ; , hence, they are believed to be less likely to trigger gastrointestinal side effects. Our objective was to establish a rapid and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography method for the determination of celecoxib in rat plasma. Methods. Using ibuprofen as internal standard, we extracted celecoxib from 0.2 ml plasma under acidic conditions into isooctane-isopropanol 95: 5 ; . After vortex-mixing for 30 sec and high-speed centrifugation for 5 min, the organic layer was evaporated using vacuum centrifugation. The residue was dissolved in mobile phase [acetonitrile-water-acetic acidtriethylamine 47: 53: 0.1: ; ] and injected to a reversed-phase chromatographic system consisting of an autoinjector, a variable UV detector set at 254 nm, a computerized integrator, a 10 cm C analytical column packed with 5m of reversed-phase 18 particles and a stainless steel filter guard column. The flow rate was 1 mL min. Results. The response was linear within 201000 ng ml range r 0.99 ; . Extraction efficiency was found to be 70%. Intra- and inter-day variability was 10% with an accuracy of 10%. The run-time was 20 min. Conclusion. The assay was suitable for determination of celecoxib pharmacokinetics in rats following single 5 mg kg doses. This assay was found to be both time- and cost-efficient as compared to the previous reported method. It is readily adoptable for analysis of celecoxib from human plasma. Mode of action: Polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution PEG-ES ; is an osmotically balanced solution used for WBI. PEG-ES cleanses of the bowel by means of fluid overload, inducing a liquid stool within a short period of time. The concentration of electrolytes in the solution causes no net absorption or secretion of ions; thus no significant changes in water or electrolyte balance occur. WBI is a treatment option for potentially toxic ingestion of sustained release or enteric coated drugs. It is also of use for the removal of ingested packets of illicit drug or agents not absorbed by charcoal. It should be continued until the rectal effluent becomes clear. WBI is contraindicated in the presence of ileus, obstruction, bowel perforation, clinically significant gastrointestinal haemorrhage, haemodynamic instability, uncontrollable intractable vomiting, coma, seizures and an unprotected compromised airway or if the patient is obtunded. Dr David Baker, Locum Medical Toxicologist, Chemical Hazards and Posions Division London ; , Health Protection Agency Exercise R53 was held in Paris on 10th October 2004. The exercise was designed to test management in a large referral hospital following a terrorist explosion of a radiological or `dirty' ; bomb. Such a device involves the dissemination of a radioactive isotope in a pulverised form using conventional explosives. Casualties from such an incident will therefore be expected to be suffering from major and minor penetrating trauma, blast burns and also be contaminated. The exercise was held at the Hopital Necker in central Paris which is a teaching hospital and also houses the headquarters of Service d'Aide Medical Urgente SAMU ; . Medical and nursing staff from the hospital and other hospitals of the Paris hospital service were involved in the exercise as well as personnel from the Fire, Police and the French state radiological protection service. Exercise R53 complemented previous operations to test casualty following release of chemical or biological agents. It was designed to test planning for a radiological device photograph 1 ; and to make hospital personnel aware of the special problems involved. The exercise consisted of two phases: management of 50 contaminated walking and stretcher cases who arrived from a notional incident site at a nearby surface metro station without warning at the hospital gates management of three seriously injured cases one of whom was being ventilated ; straight to the operating theatre in the hospital without decontamination. 18 muscles, while low molecular weight sTnT are specific to fast muscles, we expected the expression of sTnT isoforms in the soleus muscle to be switched to a faster phenotype. Although an increase in fTnT expression and a slight decrease of total sTnT expression was observed after HU 2, 30 ; , it appears that the sTnT expression pattern is not influenced by 15 days of HU, suggesting that this pattern is not altered by changes in the neuromuscular activity, in contrast to other contractile proteins. Nevertheless, the specific expression of one of the two possible exon 6 variants in slow or fast muscles suggests a functional role for the two alternative splice variants. HU does not alter the pattern of sTnT isoforms in soleus muscle. Thus, their role might be a more structural one, possibly effective mainly during embryogenesis. At present, it is difficult to attribute a specific function to these specific sTnT isoforms in fast muscles. To conclude, sTnTx increases the diversity of rat sTnT isoforms described until now. TnT expression has been shown to be highly sensitive to muscle functional demand, probably to ensure a rapid adaptation of the muscle to new conditions 2, 13, 30 ; . The new, low molecular weight isoform is predominantly expressed in fast muscles, and both small isoforms conferred lower Ca2 + affinity than the higher molecular weight isoforms. The observed heterogeneity in the expression patterns of rat sTnT isoforms, between slow and fast muscle fibres, may contribute to a fine contractile adaptation to various physiological, structural or developmental conditions. We show here that the sTnT expression pattern does not switch from slow to fast type in soleus under strong environmental conditions. Further work is required to understand the role of sTnT isoforms in fast muscle fibers and the significance of the predominant expression of specific splicing variants and doxorubicin. Fink: Regarding coughing, as we looked at insulin systems and at reported levels of cough among devices, it appeared there was a higher instance of cough in the reported work with the powder formulations. I looked at the literature on a few of the drugs that are available in both powder and nebulizer formulations, and it seemed that a higher percentage of cough was reported with the powder than with nebulizer formulations. Geller: Several years ago we did a study to compare delivery of dornase alfa to CF patients with 2 different nebulizers, and I think the incidence of cough there was about 25% with a 23 minute treatment. It can happen. Some of these patients cough a lot and dronabinol.

A fracture does increase the risk of intracranial injury up to 10 times, may give clues to inflicted head injury from the fracture pattern anything but a single linear fracture ; and indicates that follow up is required to detect the possible presence of a leptomeningeal cyst. CT scan The most accurate and rapid means of detecting intracranial injury is with a CT scan. A CT scan is itself a safe procedure although some children require sedation particularly between six months and four years of age ; and or general anaesthesia for the procedure. Further, given the issue of distance and dislocation for families if the child needs to move to a larger centre, the benefits of a scan have to be weighed against the risks of delay in diagnosis resulting from an observation-only policy. If a CT scan is accessible this should be performed as the investigation of choice. Access to monitoring and resuscitation is necessary during transfer and scanning. Alternatively, a policy of skull x-ray and observation may be appropriate in low-risk patients, if the practitioner is aware that deterioration can occur despite an initial categorisation of low risk. CT scans can also be `normal' if performed early after the injury. Sub-dural haematoma classically manifests clinically some time after the initial injury often with subtle symptoms. Thus practitioners should perform a repeat CT scan if ongoing observation indicates deterioration and leads to recategorisation, eg persistence or development of neurological symptoms or signs. Young children are particularly difficult to evaluate and clinicians should have a low threshold for repeat CT scan or consultation with a paediatric expert if a CT scan is unavailable. Transport for the child with a head injury to a children's hospital NETS hotline telephone number is 1300 362 500. NETS NSW Newborn & Paediatric Emergency Transport Service ; is the statewide retrieval service for babies and children in NSW. In this document, calls to NETS are recommended for patients with moderate or severe head injuries, requiring transfer and or advice. Advice about minor head injuries is likely to be managed at local or regional level. Calls to NETS usually involve simultaneously ; conferencing a number of medical specialists eg NETS' consultant, paediatric emergency physicians, intensivists, neurosurgeons, paediatric surgeons ; to provide a clinical consultation that results in appropriate management advice. It is recognised that all clinical information may not be available when advice calls are made early, but such calls are encouraged if clinical support or advice is needed urgently. Concurrently, if appropriate, a medical retrieval will be activated by the same telephone call. Appropriate management and transport may involve the use of local, regional and other statewide resources, which can all be activated by the call to NETS. Changes in the patient's condition should result in further consultation with NETS, even once retrieval has been activated, to permit a change in management strategy if required by the patient's condition. All clinical calls to NETS are audio taped for clinical and quality reasons, and become a permanent component of the NETS' medical record. Ambulance pre-hospital notification, when escalated to a state co-ordination level, will engage NETS via the MRU medical retrieval unit and dss.

If you use questions 7 and 9, make sure that the responses do not reinforce gender role stereotypes or imply that gay people do not have children. Think about the key points that you want the lesson to bring out, and add any questions that would extend your participants' understanding. For example, you might want to stress that people do not choose their sexual orientation. Adapting the Lesson Adapt the questions on the worksheet so that they reflect the situation where you live, for example, question 8. If you cannot reproduce the worksheet, you can either write the questions on the blackboard or read them out as your participants answer and dok.
